‘Hello Fresh’ can’t even help me

I’ve been having one of ‘thoseeee days’ today, I’m sure you all can relate. Hoping blogging will make me feel a bit better. So here we go. I wanted to share with you all our first meal we tried from hello fresh last night! Its quiet the story let me tell you …

I am so so thankful my past client/turned friend sent me a weeks free trail for hello fresh after instagramming that I clearly suck at cooking. I was so excited to try it! Went online and set up my account and they shipped the meals! Super easy to set up.

Matthew and I struggle big time with the planning and prepping of food. Hence why we have both gained weight. We’re the type of people who are, well … lazy I guess when it comes to food. We just want easy and want it done. We love going out to eat, fattening and expensive! We also are very plain picky eaters. Matt literally puts ketchup on everything. I do love fruits and veggies, but the plan just isn’t there so a lot of time I do not have them on hand. So it did scare me a bit when I saw the photos of these fancy looking meals online, but I told myself, we’re trying it! I mean its 5 meals free!

Fast forward and we got our package on Tuesday! Of course I did it yet again when Matt called me that night on the way home from work and asked if I wanted him to just pick up food [he didn’t know we had gotten the package], I starred at the box for a second, thought about the work, and said yeah, pick something up! haha. So started off great clearly. So last night, I open the box … I’m excited! I’m ready to do this! Everything comes packaged so cute and exciting, it really helped me to get pumped up. Then I open the recipe book.

Whew. Overwhelemed already. Yup folks, that is how awful I am. I have all the ingredients sitting in front of me with instructions and I immediately get turned of and don’t want to do it. I was like a 2 year old stomping their feet saying I HATE COOKING MATT! Ugh, grr, and lots of other complaining noises. He came over and looked at the picture and was like yeah, what the heck is that?! Then it hit me, I’m doing it! We’re going to atleast TRY it and try something new. We clearly need to change our way of eating so here is the first step and I do not want to look back and regret not even trying!

Step 1, squeeze lemon, [alright i can do that] mince garlic … shit what does mince mean?! [look up on youtube], attempt mincing and do the shittiest job you’ve ever seen … Matt walks into kitchen to tell me I’m using the wrong knife, UGH, keep going keep going ….

Step 2 I handled like a pro. Place chicken in the pan with olive oil. BOOM. DONE.

Step 3, make chimichurri [me reading it in my head sounded like a 4 year old reading for the first time, chimmmiiiicurry?! Wth is that?!]

Fast forward and after about nearly breaking my knife in half cutting the sweet potato [seriously are they always that hard to cut?!] I have them in the oven with olive oil ‘drizzled’ on them andddd theeennnn the kitchen starts getting smokey. Then the living room, then all bedrooms. MOM’S COOKING LEVI. All windows are open, front door … mind you its 15 degrees outside. But hey, the fire alarm actually didn’t go off. Yes we did check to make sure they’re working, Matt said there is a button on there that says ‘Leah’s cooking’. HA. HA. Very funny. It was the cherry on top that olive oil dripped all in our oven [which who has time to clean that for hours]. So thankful Matt scrubbed it for me that night, I think he felt bad for me. As he should have.

Needless to say we laughed most of the night so atleast that was entertaining.

So I tried my darndest to put the presentation together on the plate [with a baby in my arms mind you] like in the photo on the recipe, [please don’t laugh at my ‘finely chopped’ parsley]. We sit down and just say hey, if it sucks, you can run to McDonalds. And guess what guys …. IT WAS AWESOME. I couldn’t believe it. I was KIIIIIIIND of proud of myself, minus the fact that our whole house reeked all night and we had a candle in every room. I was very impressed! Round two is tonight so we shall see what story that produces! Meatloaf [don don dooooonnnnn].

I’m not sure we will keep going with it at this point in our lives … meaning with having two small babes … diapers, formula, diapers, wipes, diapers … just because of the financial end of it … but we do realize that going out to eat is just as, if not more than doing something like this. So we shall see.

A huge thank you to Amber for sharing this with us, I had to be completely honest with my story, but know I appreciated it the whole entire time! Even when I was saying curse words in my head while mincing garlic … which my breath still smells like by the way. And yes, I’ve brushed my teeth several times.

Anyone else try hello fresh?! I would love to hear what your thoughts are and if you have a story of filling your house with smoke, I’d love to hear it so I know I’m not the only one! And if anything I hope you got a chuckle out of my experience & story. I have to say too, their customer service is amazing. I emailed them a question and literally, less than two minutes later they answer.

Happy Thursday night! Tomorrow starts the weekend and Levi’s birthday celebration extravaganza!!!! THANK FREAK’N GOODNESS!

xo, Leah
